The tick season starts in March. Get ready.

18. 2. 2025
Right now, in winter is the ideal time to get vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis. Ticks are not active and the number of patients with this disease has been increasing in recent years. This is confirmed by data from hygienists, who record an increase of hundreds of cases year-on-year. At the same time, according to health professionals from AGEL polyclinics, interest in vaccination in the annual premium health care program AGEL Plus is also growing. According to vaccinologists, however, this is still not enough.
The tick season starts in March. Get ready.
Many of today's adults were vaccinated in childhood, but the period of effectiveness has already expired. Just like Mr. Tomáš from Lednice, who decided to get revaccinated. "My mother arranged it for us back then, well, and I want to get vaccinated because I like going to nature in the summer," Mr. Tomáš tells Český Rozhlas.

According to experts, getting vaccinated in the winter is ideal, as it takes a while for the vaccine to take effect, and ticks are not yet active at this time. However, many people only get vaccinated when spring arrives, as Alena Dvořáková from the vaccination center in Jihlava explains.
Interest only increases in the spring. It is usually at the last minute, just before the season or already in the season, when the ticks start to be active. According to Alena Dvořáková, vaccinated individuals have a minimal chance of getting infected from a tick. If the vaccination fails, it can happen and these are exceptional cases, so they are mostly people who have some kind of immune defect, or the vaccination was not carried out correctly.

The number of infected people is increasing. Last year, there were 670 people in the Czech Republic, about 150 more year-on-year, and there were also more patients with Lyme disease, also transmitted by ticks, but there is no vaccine for this yet.
